Dr. Tonia Taylor is a Professor with over 20 years of service to an academic health science center in Jackson, Mississippi. In 1992, Dr. Taylor began a rewarding career in occupational therapy working with patients experiencing severe physical trauma, such as spinal cord and traumatic brain injury. Personal and professional interactions over the next decade led her to consider a career change in order to focus on the mental health of clients recovering from injury. However, it was her father’s story that solidified the direction that she would take. He spoke candidly about his spinal cord injury and the dark days of depression that followed. So, in 2009, Dr. Taylor earned a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Jackson State University, an HBCU in Jackson, Mississippi. And the rest, as they say, is history. Now in full-time academia, Dr. Taylor enjoys teaching psychiatric and psychosocial courses to occupational therapy students. She has received numerous accolades, written book chapters, and been the invited guest speaker for many venues. Currently she is working on a grant-funded partnership targeting adolescent behavioral health in area public schools. She is also an ambassador for increased university diversity and inclusion, and for increasing minority presence in health care professions
